The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenceman Erik Gustafsson to a one-year, $800,000 contract, the club announced Monday.

Gustafsson, 29, began his career in Chicago, where he played four seasons from 2015-16 to 2019-20. In 2018-19, he recorded 60 points (17 goals, 43 assists) in 79 games to lead all defencemen on the team.

Since then, Gustafsson has played for three teams. The Blackhawks traded him to the Calgary Flames at the 2020 trade deadline. He then signed with the Philadelphia Flyers prior to the 2020-21 season before being dealt at the deadline once again, this time to the Montreal Canadiens. He played 16 games and produced three points in Montreal's run to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Nynashamn, Sweden native most recently attended the New York Islanders' training camp on a professional tryout.
