The Columbus Blue Jackets re-signed restricted free agent Nick Blankenburg to a two-year contract worth $1.65 million on Friday.

Blankenburg joined the Blue Jackets in April on a one-year, entry-level deal after completing his senior season at the University of Michigan.

The 24-year-old defenceman from Washington, Mich., had one goal and two assists in seven games during his rookie campaign.

"Nick is a hard-nosed, competitive, smart defenceman who really impressed us after his arrival late last season," general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said in a statement. "He has great potential, and we are very excited to watch his continued growth and development with our club."

Blankenburg also played for the United States at the World Hockey Championship in May until a knee injury ended his tournament after four games.
