For the first time since the late '90s, Pierre McGuire could soon be back in the fold with an NHL organization.
The Arizona Coyotes currently find themselves in the midst of a general manager search after the recent departure of John Chayka, and it seems McGuire is in the mix for the role.
"The longtime broadcaster working at NBC has had some conversations with the Coyotes about that opening," Sportsnet's Chris Johnston said Saturday during Hockey Night in Canada's 'Headlines' segment. "Another name that came out this week was Jason Karmanos, the assistant GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins."
While McGuire is well-known as a broadcaster, the 59-year-old spent parts of six seasons in the NHL during the '90s, serving as a scout and assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins -- winning a Stanley Cup with the club as an assistant coach in 1992 -- before moving on to serve as assistant coach, head coach and general manager for the Hartford Whalers, and as a scout for the Ottawa Senators.
Following Chayka's departure in the desert, Steve Sullivan assumed GM duties while the club conducts their search.
"What's interesting here to me is that Steve Sullivan, who's holding the job on an interim basis, is taking calls right now," Johnston said.
"This is kind of this strange off-season, and I know he's getting a lot of interest in Darcy Kuemper, the goaltender there, from a trade perspective. So, in the background of this GM search, he's also talking to some teams about trades."
