Michael DiPietro's first NHL shutout carried special meaning for him.
The Boston Bruins goaltender made 28 saves in a 6-0 win over the Nashville Predators as the Bruins celebrated Hockey Fights Cancer Night at TD Garden on Thursday.
DiPietro, 27, lost his mother Rebecca to cancer when he was five years old.
"For me it means a lot, but also to my family and everyone back home, I just want to make them proud," DiPietro said. "Obviously this is a really special moment."
DiPietro earned a full-time NHL job this season after he won the AHL's Most Outstanding Player award with the Providence Bruins a year ago.
The Amherstburg, Ont., native has now made three starts this season, winning two with a .941 save percentage and a 1.69 goals-against average.
