The next World Cup of Hockey could be coming to Alberta.
The Calgary Flames have entered the running to be one of the host cities for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, Sportsnet's Eric Francis reports.
Calgary's Scotiabank Place, which will open in time for the 2027-28 season, will be one of the 25 venues under consideration by the NHL and NHLPA.
“CSEC and our local civic partners are very pleased to have been selected to move forward to the next stage of the evaluation process,” Flames president Robert Hayes told Francis.
The World Cup is scheduled to take place in February 2028 and host cities from across North America and Europe are being considered. The hosts are expected to be announced in the early months of 2026 after each city finalizes their submissions and both the NHL and NHLPA review them.
Seen as a jumping-off point after the 4 Nations, the 2028 World Cup of Hockey will feature eight teams with a round-robin stage followed by an elimination stage. Two cities will be chosen to host the round-robin stage, with the elimination stage set to take place in just one of the selected locales.
The 2028 World Cup of Hockey will be the fourth iteration of the tournament, with prior competitions in 1996, 2004 and 2016. The 2016 tournament was hosted in Toronto, where Canada beat Team Europe to claim the gold medal.
