Cam Talbot's journeyman career is now one for the record books.
The veteran goaltender suited up for his ninth NHL team on Friday when he started in net for the Columbus Blue Jackets. That sets a new record for the most different franchises a goaltender has played for.
Talbot, 39, made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in 2013-14 and has since also appeared in games for the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings.
Talbot has a 278-204-53 record over his now 14-year career, with a .911 career save percentage and 33 shutouts. He finished fourth in voting for the Vezina Trophy in 2016-17 when he started 73 games for the Oilers, winning 42 of them with seven shutouts.
Seven other goalies played in games for eight different franchises over their careers: Sean Burke, Chad Johnson, Alex Auld, James Reimer, Ron Tugnutt, Curtis McElhinney and Gary Smith. Reimer is still active and could tie Talbot at nine if he signs on with a team this season.
The record for most teams played for by a skater is 12, set by forward Mike Sillinger in the 1990s and early 2000s. Among active players, Luke Schenn of the Vancouver Canucks and Ian Cole of the Chicago Blackhawks lead the way with 10 teams each.
