Mike Matheson's pockets will be a little lighter ahead of the regular season.
The Montreal Canadiens defenceman was fined $5,000 for roughing Ottawa Senators forward Ridley Greig, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday.
The fine is the maximum allowable under the CBA.
During the second period of Saturday's contest, Matheson took exception with Greig taking him down in front of his net and responded with a punch to the head before adding a couple shots on the ice.
Both Matheson and Greig were handed two-minute penalties for roughing.
The Canadiens begin the regular season on Sep. 29 against Toronto, while the Senators' first game will also be against the Maple Leafs on Oct. 3.
