Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber has been fined $5,000, the league's maximum-allowable fine under the current CBA, for cross-checking Toronto Maple Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds.

The fine comes one day after the Maple Leafs 5-1 victory over the Canadiens in Game 2 of the first round.

Montreal took seven minor penalties in the game -- Weber was assessed a cross-checking minor for a hit on Toronto forward Pierre Engvall mid-way through the third.

Both players were later assessed 10-minute misconducts after tempers flared with 20 seconds left in the game.
