The Vancouver Canucks are adding to their goaltending depth, claiming Leevi Meriläinen off of waivers from the Ottawa Senators, the team announced Friday.
The 24-year-old was the odd netminder out with the Senators going with Samuel Ersson as the backup to Linus Ullmark.
Meriläinen played in 20 games for the Senators last season, posting an 8-10-1 record with a 3.51 goals-against average and an .860 save percentage. He also appeared in 19 games in the AHL with the Belleville Senators, going 8-8-2 with a 2.77 GAA, a .909 save percentage, and two shutouts.
In 34 career NHL games, Meriläinen had a 16-14-3 with a 3.00 GAA, an .885 save percentage, and three shutouts.
Meriläinen won a silver medal with Finland at the 2022 world junior championship.
Meriläinen was selected by the Senators in the third round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
