Two of the most accomplished players in Vancouver Canucks history will now be tasked with leading the club into its next era of success.
Henrik and Daniel Sedin have been promoted to co-presidents of hockey operations, Sportsnet can confirm on Thursday. Ryan Johnson, who has been with the Canucks since 2013, has also been promoted to the general manager job.
The trio will succeed president Jim Rutherford, who will move into an advisory role next month, and former general manager Patrik Allvin, who was fired in April.
The Sedin brothers, who are the two-highest scoring Canucks of all-time, have been working in the team’s player development department in recent years. They spent their entire 17-year playing careers with the Canucks, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, and were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.
Johnson, 49, is a first-time general manager but has been the general manager of the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, leading them to a Calder Cup championship in 2025.
He previously served as player development consultant and director of player development before being elevated to his AGM role. Johnson’s time with the organization has spanned three general managers — Allvin, Jim Benning and Mike Gillis. As a player, he appeared in 701 games as a forward for the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, St. Louis Blues, Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks.
Johnson beat out Boston Bruins assistant general manager Evan Gold, believed to be on Rutherford’s shortlist, for the job.
One of his first acts of business now will be to prepare for the 2026 NHL Draft, where the Canucks, selecting third overall, will have their highest draft pick since selecting the Sedins in 1999.
