Washington Capitals centre Nicklas Backstrom is listed as week-to-week and will miss the start of training camp due to ongoing hip rehabilitation, the team announced Thursday.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said after the 2021 playoffs that Backstrom dealt with a nagging injury late in the year. The 33-year-old also turned down an opportunity to play for Sweden at the 2021 IIHF World Championship.

Though there are no reports of Backstrom having undergone surgery this off-season, he did undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his hip in 2015.

A 14-season NHL veteran, Backstrom produced 15 goals and 53 points in 55 games last season.
