Washington Capitals defenceman John Carlson left Friday's ice in Friday's game against the Winnipeg Jets after taking a slapshot to the face area.
The injury happened at the start of the third period, when a point shot from Jets' defenceman Brenden Dillon floated upwards and made contact with the side of Carlson's head.
He was able to skate off the ice on his own, but went straight to the locker room.
Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette gave an update on Carlson's condition after the game, saying he has been transported to hospital for precautionary evaluation.
In 29 games for the Capitals this season, Carlson has eight goals and 21 points.
