Things seem to be progressing well for one of Team Canada's goalies ahead of the Winter Olympics.
Washington Capitals netminder Logan Thompson is "real close" to returning from injury, with the team targeting Thursday against the Nashville Predators for him to make his next start, head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters Monday.
"We're gonna still call him day-to-day," Carbery said. "And just for the purposes of clarity for his situation, the target is for him to come back before the break. The target is for him to play against Nashville."
Thompson has been out since Jan. 27 with an upper-body injury and was placed on the injured reserve Monday to make room on the roster for defenceman Matt Roy. He's set to miss Monday's game against the Islanders and Tuesday's against the Flyers.
He was injured when he was hit in the mask by a puck in last week's loss to the Seattle Kraken, although he did stay in that game.
The 28-year-old has an 18-16-4 record with a .912 save percentage and two shutouts this season.
The Calgary native is one of three goalies set to represent Canada at the Milano-Cortina Olympics next week. Jordan Binnington and Darcy Kuemper are the others.
The NHL season will pause for the Olympics after games on Feb. 5. Team Canada opens the tournament on Feb. 12 against Czechia.
