Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will miss a second consecutive game with an upper-body injury as his team takes on the New York Islanders on Thursday, head coach Peter Laviolette said according to Samantha Pell of the Washington Post.
Ovechkin did practise on Thursday, and Laviolette said he moved well, but added his status for Friday night's final game of the regular season against the New York Rangers is still uncertain.
Ovechkin sustained the injury in the third period of Washington's 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday after falling awkwardly into the boards following a breakaway. The Capitals have since listed him as day-to-day.
Ovechkin bagged 50 goals, his ninth 50-plus goals campaign, and 40 assists in 77 games for the Caps in 2021-22. The Capitals will face either the Florida Panthers or Rangers in the first round.
