The Washington Capitals are rewarding a netminder in their system.
The team announced Tuesday that Mitch Gibson has been signed to a two-year, two-way contract beginning this season.
Per the team, Gibson will be placed on waivers later in the day for the purpose of being loaned to the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears.
The 26-year-old was selected by the Capitals in the fourth round (124th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft.
Gibson has a 6-4-2 record, 2.48 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and one shutout in 12 games with Hershey this season.
He has a 9-4-2 record, 2.37 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and one shutout in 15 career AHL games.
Before turning pro, Gibson played at Harvard University.
