The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward John Leonard to a one-year extension, the team announced Thursday.
The financial terms of the deal were not initially announced.
Leonard, 27, split time between Detroit and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins this season, continuing to serve as a depth option at the NHL level while driving offence in the minors.
In Grand Rapids, he has been one of the team’s most productive forwards, leading the Griffins with 32 goals and 53 points in 46 games.
At the NHL level, he has provided short-term scoring bursts during call-up games, including a three-game point streak earlier in the season while filling in during injuries and roster adjustments. In all, he had two goals and two assists in 11 games with the Red Wings this year.
Since being picked 182nd overall by the San Jose Sharks in 2018, the Westwood, N.J. native has eight goals and 13 assists in 81 NHL games.
He joined the Red Wings as a free agent last summer on a one-year deal.
