New Jersey Devils defenceman P.K. Subban has been named the 2021-22 King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner, presented to the player “who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”
The other two finalists were Darnell Nurse of the Edmonton Oilers, and Ryan Getzlaf, who retired this season after spending his entire 17-season career with the Anaheim Ducks.
The winner was chosen by a committee of senior NHL executives, led by commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly.
Subban, a four-time finalist, launched the P.K. Subban Foundation in 2014, and made a $10-million pledge to the Montreal's Children's Hospital in 2015, plus donations for Ukrainian cancer patients who have been displaced due to the ongoing war in their country. He also serves as the co-chair of the NHL's Player Inclusion Committee.
"To receive it as a New Jersey Devil is pretty special, I know when you work in the community you don't do it for these types of accolades, but when I look back at all the finalists and players that have won this award, I'm very very excited to be a part of that group," said Subban in a video that aired on Sportsnet prior to Tuesday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final.
Subban will also receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity — or charities — of his choice. Nurse and Getzlaf will receive a $5,000 donation to be used in the same way.
Each NHL team selected one player from their club to be its nominee for the award.
