Pierre-Luc Dubois appears to have his eyes set on testing free agency when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2024, but the Winnipeg Jets are hoping they can have him around long term.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported during the first intermission of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final that the Jets centre has spoken to the team about his future.
"Pierre-Luc Dubois has informed the Winnipeg Jets that his current plan is to test unrestricted free agency when eligible in the summer of 2024," Friedman said. "Now the Jets have control of the process until then, and what we're also hearing though is that they wish to keep him and have him as a Jet for a long time to come."
Winnipeg acquired Dubois from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic back in January of 2021. The 22-year-old is a pending restricted free agent after signing a two-year, $10 million extension with the Blue Jackets and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024.
Dubois put up a career-high 28 goals in 81 games this season for the Jets in his first full season with the team. He also had seven goals and 13 points in 10 games with Canada in the World Hockey Championship.
The Jets will have many players set to reach free agency in 2024 including starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, captain Blake Wheeler and centre Mark Scheifele.
