The Detroit Red Wings will be without Dylan Larkin until at least next week.
The centre will not play the first two games for the Red Wings as he recovers from an upper-body injury, head coach Todd McLellan told reporters on Thursday.
McLellan added he hoped that Larkin would be able to return by Game 3 on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.
The 30-year-old reported to training camp with an upper-body injury and did not play any of the Red Wings' pre-season games.
Larkin, the former Red Wings captain, requested a trade out of Detroit in the off-season, which would signal the end of his 11-year tenure with the Original Six squad. The team opted to strip Larkin of his captaincy ahead of training camp.
Larkin has five seasons remaining on the eight-year, $69.6-million contract he signed in 2023, which includes a full no-movement clause. Initially, Larkin indicated he would only accept a trade to Minnesota, Florida, Vegas or Carolina, but has reportedly expanded that trade list to eight teams to help better facilitate a trade.
The Michigan native ranks 10th in franchise history with 643 points.
The Red Wings open their season Friday against the New York Rangers.
