The Calgary Flames have hired former Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray, who resigned from the position in November after an investigation by the team into his workplace conduct, as a scout, Sportsnet's Eric Francis has learned.
Murray's primary task with the Flames will be scouting the West Coast. According to The Athletic, Murray attended the Ducks' game against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday at the Honda Center.
With Calgary, Murray and head coach Darryl Sutter will be reunited, having played together in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1980s. The two went on to preside over rival teams during their coaching careers, with Murray overseeing the Ducks and Sutter coaching the Los Angeles Kings during their years of Cup contention in the 2010s.
Murray later hired Sutter as an advisor to the coaching staff in Anaheim in 2019, before Sutter replaced Geoff Ward as the head coach of the Calgary Flames.
The 67-year-old Murray, whose Ducks teams won five straight Pacific Division titles, had been Anaheim's general manager since 2008 before the investigation into his behaviour and his eventual resignation.
A person with knowledge of the Ducks' front office told The Associated Press that the initial complaints against Murray prompting the investigation all involved verbal abuse of team employees.
When he resigned from the Ducks, Murray said he would enter an alcohol abuse program.
“I want to apologize to anyone adversely affected by my behaviour,” Murray said in November. “As I step away from the Ducks, I will focus my attention on where it should be: improving my life for the betterment of my family and friends."
