The Calgary Flames will be down a man on their blue line for the foreseeable future.
Defenceman Jake Bean will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on an undisclosed injury, the team told reporters on Thursday.
Bean has been out since a Dec. 6 game against the Utah Mammoth with the injury and was placed on the injured reserve on Dec. 11.
It's unclear how Bean was hurt, but it was indicated to Sportsnet's Pat Steinberg that he had been dealing with something for some time.
The 27-year-old blue-liner has one goal and one assist in 16 games with the Flames this season, averaging 15:57 of ice time a night.
A native of Calgary, Alta., Bean has spent the last two seasons in his hometown after joining the team as a free agent in the summer of 2024.
Drafted 13th overall by Carolina in 2016, he has 16 goals and 49 assists over 277 career NHL games, split between the Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets and Flames.
