Flames' Mikael Backlund fined $5K for cross-checking Flyers' Konecny

Check this out, as Flames forward Mikael Backlund receives only a 2-minute penalty for this dangerous cross-check to Flyers' Travis Konecny, who would be okay after going head first into the boards.

Calgary Flames centre Mikael Backlund has been fined $5,000, the maximum under the CBA, for his cross-check on Philadelphia Flyers' Travis Konecny.

The NHL's department of player safety announced the fine on Wednesday.

Backlund cross-checked Konecny during a game on Tuesday between the two teams. The incident occurred at 11:53 of the first period and Backlund was given a minor penalty for boarding. The Flyers won the game, held in Philadelphia, 2-1.

Backlund, 32, has three goals and two assists in 16 games for the Flames this season.

The Flames are 8-3-5 on the season, the Flyers 8-4-2.
