Flames pay tribute to former captain Mark Giordano ahead of 1,000th game

The Calgary Flames saluted their former captain and current Seattle Kraken defenceman Mark Giordano ahead of his 1,000th NHL regular season game Saturday night against the Washington Capitals.

The 38-year-old from Toronto joined the Kraken this year via the expansion draft, but the Flames haven't forgotten about Giordano, who spent 15 seasons, including eight as captain, with the franchise.

Undrafted but not unwanted, Giordano received an invitation to the Flames' summer camp in 2004 and made his NHL debut the following season, eventually logging 949 games with the club.

Giordano succeeded Flames legend Jarome Iginla as the 19th captain in franchise history in 2013. He recorded a career-high 74 points during 2018-19 to earn the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenceman plus a spot on the NHL First All-Star Team.

His former club paid tribute to him on Twitter with messages and well wishes from former teammates including Iginla, current players Milan Lucic and Johnny Gaudreau and others.
