It looks like Jonathan Castagna is on the verge of making his NHL debut with the Calgary Flames.
Castagna and fellow forward Aydar Suniev have been recalled from the AHL's Calgary Wranglers, the Flames announced Wednesday.
Castagna, 21, was acquired from the Utah Mammoth as part of the MacKenzie Weegar deal last season.
The six-foot-one Toronto native led NCAA Cornell in scoring last season with 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 34 games. Castagna also earned a spot on the All-ECAC First Team and was named the ECAC’s best defensive forward in his third year at Cornell.
Castagna started his pro career with two goals in a pair of games with the Wranglers to open the season.
Suniev, a third-round pick of the Flames in 2023, has one assist in seven career games with the NHL team.
The roster spots opened when the Flames assigned Connor Zary and defenceman Brayden Pachal to the Wranglers on Tuesday.
The Flames' next game is Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche (Sportsnet West, Sportsnet+, 9 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. MT).
