New Calgary Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weeger is optimistic he will sign a contract extension with the team in the near future.
“We’re trying to get something done and hopefully we’ll get something done soon," Weegar said at the Flames' golf tournament on Wednesday.
Weegar is entering the final season of a three-year, $9.75 million deal he signed with the Florida Panthers in 2020.
The Flames acquired Weegar and Jonathan Huberdeau from the Panthers in the deal sending Matthew Tkachuk to Florida in July.
Calgary signed Huberdeau to an eight-year, $84 million extension in August.
The Ottawa-born Weegar had eight goals and 36 assists in 80 games with the Panthers last season.
In 306 career NHL games, all with Florida, Weegar has 27 goals and 94 assists.
