Philadelphia Flyers defender Shayne Gostisbehere will have a hearing Wednesday for a dangerous boarding incident that occurred late in the club’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, the league’s department of player safety announced.
The incident in question came with just over four minutes remaining in the game, when Penguins defender Mark Friedman scored an empty-net goal to lift Pittsburgh’s lead to 6-3 late in the tilt.
Moments after tucking the puck into the empty cage, Friedman was shoved from behind by Gostisbehere, causing the Penguins defenceman to crash into the end-boards in a heap.
A scrum ensued as Pittsburgh took exception to the play, before the Penguins scored on the power play to eventually win the game 7-3.
Gostisbehere and Friedman were teammates for parts of three seasons, including the first four games of this 2020-21 campaign, as the latter defender was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh in February.
Friedman has three points through four games as a Penguin so far, averaging 10:36 minutes per night, while Gostisbehere has 20 points through 40 games for Philadelphia, skating 19:52 minutes per night.
