The Philadelphia Flyers will have a new tradition after every win this season as they pay respect to an all-time franchise great.
After every victory, the Flyers will hand out a Player of the Game mask in honour of the late, great Bernie Parent, who passed away at age 80 in September.
The first player to don the replica of Parent's iconic helmet from the 1970s was, aptly, goaltender Dan Vladar — who backstopped the Flyers to a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Monday night.
Parent, a two-time Stanley Cup and two-time Vezina Trophy winner with the Flyers, is widely considered one of the greatest goaltenders the NHL has ever seen.
Over 13 years in the league, the Montreal, Que., native put up a 271-198-119 record in 608 games while earning a 2.55 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.
He spent most of his career in Philadelphia, spending parts of 10 seasons with the team and establishing himself as a franchise legend with the iconic 'Broad Street Bullies' teams of the 70s.
His No. 1 jersey was retired by the Flyers in 1979 when he hung up his skates, and he became the first Flyer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984.
