NHL commissioner Gary Bettman missed the Stanley Cup presentation on Sunday because he is recovering from COVID-19.
Instead, deputy commissioner Bill Daly handed the Stanley Cup to Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog after the team's win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6.
Traditionally, Bettman is booed when he makes his remarks prior to awarding to the Cup.
Bettman recently tested positive and was unable to produce enough negative results to get back to the series in time. That left Daly to give the traditional end-of-season speech and shake Landeskog's hand before presenting the trophy.
It's the first time someone other than Bettman handed out the Cup since he took over in 1993. A league spokesman said Bettman was resting at home and feeling better.
The same scenario unfolded in the NBA Finals earlier this month with commissioner Adam Silver unable to attend the last game because of a positive COVID-19 test.
Deputy commissioner Mark Tatum presented the Larry O'Brien Trophy to the Golden State Warriors.
