Now that the Quinn Hughes trade has been made official, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin has shed some light on the whole process.
In a media availability on Friday night, Allvin shared the timeline for the move that sent the franchise cornerstone to the Minnesota Wild, stating the conversations go back to a year ago when the Canucks first became aware Hughes may want to part ways. These discussions had been ongoing as the ownership tried to convince him to stay.
"I believe this is something you probably go back even a year ago when this started to come to our attention that this might be the path that Quinn wants to go. And we were hoping, the ownership was trying to do everything, we were trying to do everything to convince him to stay and work through it," Allvin said.
"But we felt that when we were not able to do it, that's where we started the process of looking to see what potential destination that would be out there."
Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round pick will all be headed to Vancouver in exchange for the two-time all-star and 2024 Norris Trophy winner.
Hughes is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027, and the Wild will have their first opportunity to look at extending his contract in Minnesota on July 1.
