Henrik Lundqvist’s sense of style was tailor-made for the bright lights and red carpets of New York. They called him The King and he looked the part — on the ice and off of it.
Now, he’s bringing that well-crafted aesthetic to Washington, too.
Lundqvist shared a glimpse of his new Washington Capitals goalie equipment on Instagram Saturday, featuring the iconic Capitals eagle with its wings spread wide above the Capitol Building.
Seeing the 38-year-old in colours other than the ones he wore for 15 years as a member of the New York Rangers will still take some getting used to.
But all indications are that he’s acclimating well to his new D.C.-based home on the ice.
Lundqvist had the final year of his contract bought out by the Rangers in early October and signed a one-year, $1.5-million deal with the Capitals shortly after.
In what proved to be the last season of his iconic New York tenure, Lundqvist put up a 10-12-3 record in 30 games in 2019-20 with a 2.52 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage as he saw his playing time decrease with the emergence of Alexandar Georgiev and Igor Shesterkin.
Lundqvist broke into the NHL with the Rangers in 2005-06 and is the team’s all-time leader in several goalie statistics, including games played (887), wins (459), save percentage (.918) and shutouts (64).
