The hockey community has come together to show their support for Mark Scheifele.
After the Winnipeg Jets announced at Saturday's morning skate that Scheifele's father, Brad, had passed away unexpectedly overnight, stories on social media started popping up of fans making $55 donations — Scheifele's jersey number — to the NHL team's charitable foundation.
Just over an hour after the Jets suffered a season-ending 2-1 loss in Dallas to the Stars in Game 6 of their second-round series, True North Sports + Entertainment spokesperson Krista Sinaisky said more than $30,000 had been raised in $55 donations for the True North Youth Foundation.
The total was up to over $46,000 as of 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.
"A wonderful outpouring of support from the hockey community on a very tough day for the Jets family, our True North Youth Foundation is extremely grateful," Sinaisky said in an e-mail to Sportsnet.
Many Stars fans were part of the donation push as well. The Stars organization also has been part of the push, donating $5,500, Sinaisky said Sunday.
Scheifele decided to play in Game 6 hours after learning the news, and scored Winnipeg's lone goal.
