Kyle Masters is headed east.
The San Jose Sharks dealt the defenceman and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.
San Jose dealt Masters to clear a contract, allowing rookie Michael Misa to continue playing for the Sharks. Misa needed to be added to the roster to play in a 10th game and the Sharks had been at the limit of 50 contracts before the trade.
Masters, a right-shooting Edmonton native, has yet to make his NHL debut after being selected by the Minnesota Wild in the third round of the 2021 draft.
The Sharks acquired Masters in a deal for forward Oskar Olausson in October.
Playing with the ECHL's Wichita Thunder this season, Masters has three assists in 10 games.
In 35 career AHL games, all with the Iowa Wild, the 22-year-old has one goal and five assists.
The draft pick heading to the Sharks originally belonged to the Chicago Blackhawks.
