The Carolina Hurricanes and captain Jordan Staal are closing in on a contract extension, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday.
The term and the value of the contract are not yet confirmed.
The 34-year-old forward, known for his defensive and penalty-killing prowess, had 17 goals and 34 points this past season, and added another eight points through three rounds of the playoffs.
Drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006, Staal was traded to the Hurricanes in 2012 in exchange for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin and a first-round pick.
Staal has spent 11 of his 17-year NHL career with the Hurricanes, including the past four as captain.
He has registered 645 points (275 goals and 370 assists) in 1,173 career games.
