Carolina Hurricanes forward Nino Niederreiter received a one-game suspension for slashing Axel Jonsson-Fjallby of the Washington Capitals, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Saturday.
The incident occurred during the first period of Friday's game in Carolina. Niederreiter slashed Jonsson-Fjallby in the face while the forward was seated on the Capitals' bench. The 29-year-old from Switzerland was issued a two-minute penalty.
Washington defeated Carolina 4-3 in a shootout.
The Hurricanes (41-14-6) are first in the Metropolitan Division but have dropped three straight games and next host the New York Rangers on Sunday.
