Defenceman Jake Gardiner has been placed on waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The move is being made with the intent of assigning Gardiner to the taxi squad while he's sidelined with an injury.

Gardiner, 30, has registered seven assists with a plus-2 rating in 17 games with the Hurricanes this season.
