The captain is staying in Raleigh.
The Carolina Hurricanes signed Jordan Staal to a one-year contract extension through 2027-28, the team announced late Tuesday night.
The deal carries a $900,000 base salary with a $4 million signing bonus and up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses.
“Jordan is not only our captain, he’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization,” said general manager Eric Tulsky in a statement. “His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh.”
Staal, 38, appeared in 75 regular-season games for the Hurricanes, scoring 20 goals and registering 36 points. He added an additional eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games en route to the Hurricanes' second Stanley Cup championship in franchise history, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Across 1,408 career games, the Thunder Bay, Ont. native has 318 goals and 747 points during a career that spans 20 seasons.
Staal was the second-overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2006 draft and spent his first six seasons with the team, winning a Stanley Cup with Sidney Crosby and Co. in 2009.
