Joel Nystrom will be staying a while in Carolina.
The Hurricanes announced on Friday the defenceman has signed a four-yea $4.9 million contract extension with the team
The rookie has appeared in 23 games for the Hurricanes this season and has recorded four assists.
"Joel stepped into our lineup early in the season and has proven that he belongs in the NHL,” said Eric Tulsky the Hurricanes general manager. “He fits our style of play well and we are excited to watch his continued development in Carolina.”
The 23-year-old made his NHL debut at the end of October and is playing his first season in North America.
Previously the Karlstad, Sweden native had 25 goals and 61 assists in 221 Swedish Hockey League (SHL) games throughout his five seasons with Färjestad BK.
