The Carolina Hurricanes are adding some grit to their forward group.
Right-winger Givani Smith has signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Hurricanes, worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $140,000 at the AHL level, the team announced Friday.
Smith initially joined the team on a professional tryout this off-season and has played well in four pre-season games for the Hurricanes, scoring two goals and adding an assist.
A physical player, Smith also has 28 penalty minutes in his four exhibition games with the Hurricanes.
The Toronto native spent the 2024-25 season split between the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. He was held without a point in 13 NHL games but had three points in 16 AHL contests.
Smith, 27, was selected by the Detroit Red Wings 46th overall in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft. In parts of six NHL seasons, he has nine goals and 13 assists over 168 regular-season games.
