It's been a heck of a weekend for Brayden Schenn.
This time last week, he was suiting up as the captain of the St. Louis Blues. Now, four days after being traded to the New York Islanders, he returned to Enterprise Center as a visitor for the first time in nine years.
“Sitting on the opposing bench, everything is just backwards of what you’re used to," Schenn told team reporter Rachel Luscher ahead of Tuesday's game. "I’m looking forward to tonight, it’ll be emotional and weird at the same time.”
Schenn, who won a Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019, was honoured with a video tribute during the TV timeout, highlighting some of his greatest successes as a Blue — including his two-and-a-half year stint as the 24th captain in franchise history.
The Saskatoon native played 650 games with the Blues, and his 465 points (181 goals, 284 assists) rank ninth in franchise history and third amongst active players — behind only Vladimir Tarasenko and David Perron.
Schenn, 34, joined the Blues from the Philadelphia Flyers in a draft-day trade in 2017, which, at the time, was his second time being traded after he was selected fifth overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2009.
“When you get traded you don’t think it’s going to happen that fast," Schenn said, per Luscher. "A couple of my former teammates came over yesterday with their kids and played mini sticks with my kids."
Tuesday marked Schenn's second game with the Islanders, who sit third in the Metropolitan Division.
