New York Islanders forward Maxim Tsyplakov is set for a hearing with the NHL’s Player Safety Department Friday, for an illegal check to the head on Philadelphia Flyers forward Ryan Poehling.
The incident occurred midway though the first period when Tsyplakov delivered a high hit as Poehling was trying to drive the net shorthanded.
After review, on-ice officials opted against a penalty — much to the displeasure of Flyers head coach John Tortorella.
Philadelphia went on to win the contest 5-3, but had to play the rest of the game without Poehling, who was helped off the ice and did not return.
Tsyplakov, 26, is in his first year in the NHL after spending the last nine seasons in the KHL with the Moscow Spartak.
Poehling has potted 18 goals in 120 games played for the Flyers, after singing in Philadelphia during the 2023 off-season.
Flyers centre Scott Laughton was also fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for cross-checking Tsyplakov in response to the collision.
He was penalized late in the third period for cross-checking Tsyplakov from behind in the corner, the play would go on without a scuffle.
The Flyers are set to host the Islanders at home on Jan. 30th.
