The LA Kings are bringing Alex Edler back into the fold on a one-year, $750,000 contract extension.
Edler, previously known as one of the league's premier puck-moving defencemen, initially signed with LA in 2021 after a down year in Vancouver where he went goal-less in 52 games, registering a paltry eight assists and a +/- of -8.
The 36-year-old defenceman found new life with the Kings when he was able to stay on the ice — scoring 19 points in his 41 games and had the team's third-highest +/- at 18.
Despite his return to form, Edler is taking a pay cut to stay in California. With games played bonuses maxing out at $750,000, the most he can earn this season is $1.5 million, a healthy step back from the $3.5 million he earned last season.
As the Kings continue retooling around their aging core, signing Edler on the cheap provides them with cap flexibility as well as reliable minutes each night.
