The Seattle Kraken have traded centre Alex Wennberg to the New York Rangers, the team announced Wednesday.
In exchange, the Kraken have acquired a 2024 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2025 fourth-round draft pick from the Rangers.
Seattle will retain 50 percent of Wennberg’s contract.
The condition on the 2025 fourth-round pick comes from a previous trade between the Rangers and the Dallas Stars.
If Stars defenceman Nils Lundkvist reaches a total of 55 points across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 regular seasons, it will upgrade to a third-round pick. He currently sits at 31 points.
The 29-year-old Wennberg is a pending unrestricted free agent as his three-year, $13.5-million deal ends after this season. He signed it with Seattle before the Kraken’s expansion season.
The Swedish-born centre has nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 60 games this season for a Kraken team that is six points out of a wild-card berth. He is among the leaders in average ice time for Kraken forwards.
“We want to thank Alex for his contribution to the Kraken over these last three seasons,” said Seattle Kraken general manager Ron Francis in the team's statement. “Alex has been with our team since day one and was an important part of establishing our franchise. We wish him well in New York.”
Picked 14th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2013, Wennberg made his NHL debut with that team a year later.
Wennberg has 90 goals and 240 assists for 330 career points in 693 NHL games.
