Ville Ottavainen is facing a fine after a rough on-ice brawl.
The Seattle Kraken defenceman has been fined $2,190.72, the maximum allowable amount under the CBA, for acting as the aggressor in an altercation with Calgary Flames forward Brennan Othman, the NHL's department of player safety announced Friday.
The incident occurred 7:22 into the second period of Seattle's pre-season game against the Flames on Thursday night.
After Ottavainen was hit in the corner by Othmann along the boards in the Kraken zone, the Seattle defenceman pulled him down to the ice from behind and began punching the Calgary forward while he was on all fours, guarding his head.
Flames defenceman Brayden Pachal had to come to Othmann's defence, tackling Ottavainen in order to separate the two.
Ottavainen was assessed a minor instigator penalty, a major fighting penalty and a 10-minute misconduct penalty for the incident. Meanwhile, Othmann received a two-minute charging and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.
Since being drafted 99th overall in 2021, the 24-year-old Finn has made only one appearance in the NHL, registering an assist in a late-season showdown against the Los Angeles Kings at the back-end of the 2024-25 campaign.
He spent the 2025-26 season in the American Hockey League with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, where he had three goals and 14 assists in 53 games.
