With the NCAA hockey season officially over Saturday after the Frozen Four championship game saw the University of Denver defeat Boston College, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman provided an update on three players of interest.
First up was Macklin Celebrini, the projected first-overall pick for the 2024 NHL Draft. The 17-year-old Boston University freshman won the Hobey Baker Award on Friday as the top NCAA men's hockey player.
"He is on Team Canada's radar for the world championships. They would like to have him," reported Friedman during the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada.
Canada enters the 2024 edition of the tournament, which starts May 10, as the defending champions.
Next up, Friedman provided an update on University of Michigan sophomore Rutger McGroarty. The 20-year-old was drafted 14th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 2022.
"(McGroarty) is weighing both options: going back to college (or going) pro," said Friedman. "I don't want to handicap it, but he is weighing both options."
Lastly, Friedman reported that Montreal Canadiens prospect Luke Tuch is likely to make a decision about his future on Sunday. Another Boston University player, Tuch just finished his fourth season with the team.
"Montreal fans (are) wondering about Luke Tuch," said Friedman. "They already got (Lane) Hutson signed, they're very excited about it. I understand that Tuch's decision is coming around the next 24 hours, whether to sign with the Canadiens or test free agency. Again, I can't handicap it, but it is coming."
Tuch was selected 47th overall by the Canadiens at the 2020 draft.
