In response to Boston Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards's comments about his weight, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Pat Maroon announced Wednesday he's donating $2,000 to Tampa Bay Thrives — a nonprofit assisting those struggling with mental health and substance use issues.
"In support of those struggling with mental health, bullying and body image I am making a 2,000 donation in the name of (Edwards) to @TampaBayThrives and I encourage NHL fans to join me," Maroon wrote on Twitter.
Edwards, who does Bruins play-by-play for NESN, first noted Maroon's 238-pound listed weight on Day 1 of training camp, saying "I've got a feeling he's had a few more pizzas between then and now."
After colour commentator Andy Brickley said the weight is listed "before (the) pre-game" meal, Edwards added: "[Intermittent] fasting for Pat Maroon is like four hours without a meal."
Edwards then gave Maroon credit for his list of accolades, which include three Stanley Cups and 278 points over 671 career NHL games so far.
“But hey, three Cups in a row, who can argue with his formula?” said Edwards, referring to Maroon's run of consecutive titles from 2019-2021.
Already, Maroon has his team captain and another NHL team jumping on board in support of the cause.
