The Toronto Maple Leafs have assigned goaltender Joseph Woll to the AHL's Toronto Marlies, the team announced Wednesday.
The 25-year-old has not played since Dec. 7, when he suffered a high-ankle sprain. He had an 8-5-1 record, 2.80 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in 15 games this season when he went down.
Woll returned to practice to skate with the team on Feb. 12.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters that the plan is for Woll to practise with the Marlies, play an AHL game this weekend, and then the team will see how he feels.
“It’s probably more on Joseph at this point than it is us,” Keefe said.
Before the injury, Woll had seized the No. 1 goaltender job for Toronto, overtaking the then-struggling Ilya Samsonov.
Samsonov has regained his form recently and is the current No. 1 ahead of Martin Jones.
The Leafs, winners of four in a row, face the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+.
