The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to have to cross their fingers when it comes to the status of Brandon Carlo.
The defenceman has experienced a setback as he attempts to recover from a lower-body injury and has returned to Toronto for evaluation, coach Craig Berube told reporters on Monday after practice in Florida.
Carlo has been out since suffering the injury during a game on Nov. 13.
Carlo has recorded two assists in 18 games for Toronto this season while averaging just over 20 minutes of ice time per contest.
The Leafs acquired Carlo, 29, in a trade with the Boston Bruins at last year's trade deadline.
Meanwhile, Oliver Ekman-Larsson was practising with the Leafs on Monday after exiting Saturday's win in Pittsburgh with an upper-body injury.
