Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov suffered a neck injury in Game 3 that knocked him out of the playoffs, he revealed on Monday.
The Russian goalie disclosed the injury on locker clear-out day for the Maple Leafs, who were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday night in overtime of Game 5 by the Florida Panthers.
The injury came when teammate Luke Schenn slid into him while trying to stop a goal. Samsonov was slammed back into the net and had to be removed from the game. Backup Joseph Woll replaced him and played the next two games.
The 26-year-old from Magnitogorsk, Russia is a restricted free agent this summer, coming off a one-year deal that paid him $1.8 million. He is eligible for arbitration if he does not like the qualifying offer the Leafs extend him, though he stated Monday that he wants to re-sign with the team.
