The Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights look to be discussing a sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Golden Knights could send forward Nicolas Roy to the Maple Leafs if the two sides can agree to a deal.
Marner has a no-movement clause and would have to agree to be dealt to Vegas. By completing a sign-and-trade, Marner can get a maximum of eight years on a contract instead of seven years if he becomes a free agent on July 1.
This is not the first time the Leafs and Golden Knights discussed a deal involving Marner. Friedman reported in 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that the Leafs and Golden Knights talked about a potential deal last off-season, but it was never seen as realistic after Toronto asked for defenceman Shea Theodore.
The 28-year-old recorded a career-high 102 points and 75 assists during the regular season. He added 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) in 13 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Leafs general manager Brad Treliving told reporters before the draft that it was unlikely for Marner to be back in Toronto.
"Unless there’s a significant change here, I would anticipate that he’s gonna hit the market," Treliving told reporters. "And we’ll see where things go."
