Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will have an MRI on his knee on Friday to determine the extent of his injury, sources confirm to Sportsnet.
Matthews was injured in the second period during Thursday night's win against the Anaheim Ducks after receiving a knee-on-knee hit from Radko Gudas.
Gudas was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct on the play, while Matthews was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
Meanwhile, Gudas will have a hearing by phone with the NHL Department of Player Safety and could be suspended for a maximum of 5 games.
Matthews missed six games earlier this season with a lower-body injury.
There are only 16 games left in the regular season, and the Maple Leafs sit last in the Atlantic Division with 67 points.
